When Hurricane Melissa tore through Jamaica, it left more than broken homes and shattered roofs in its wake. It fractured communities. It flattened sanctuaries that had once echoed with worship. And it left hundreds of pastors staring at the ruins of the places where they had shepherded God’s people for decades.
In the town of George’s Plain, just an hour outside Montego Bay, we’ve established a base to welcome volunteers who feel stirred to help. We’ve done this sort of work for 35 years. From Katrina to Haiti, we’ve helped rebuild what hurricanes tried to destroy, not just homes and churches, but faith and dignity.
Now it’s Jamaica’s turn. And I’d like to invite you to join us. We’ve already begun partnering with over 200 Jamaican churches impacted by the storm. These are pastors whose congregations are waiting for signs of hope. And maybe that hope looks like us, showing up with open hands.
Who Can Join the Effort?
Relief work is not just for professionals. Our base in George’s Plain can host over 150 people at a time, and we’re ready to equip every team that comes. Whether you’re a youth group leader, a pastor, or just someone who wants to make a difference, you’re needed. Anyone 12 and older can help.
This will be a months-long effort. From spring through summer, teams will be flying in, picking up tools, and getting to work. All they need to do is show up, we’ll take care of the rest.
And while we’ll be doing hard work, we’ll also take time to enjoy the beauty of the island. You’ll get a chance to see Dunn’s River Falls, dip your toes in the sea, and taste real jerk chicken and fresh seafood. It’s not just about relief, it’s about renewal. For Jamaica, and for you.
Why Now?
Too often we let urgency fade with the headlines. But the work of healing takes time. And someone has to be there after the cameras leave. I believe the Church is at its best when we respond not just to crisis, but to calling.
I’ve seen what happens when people say yes to trips like this. God shows up in the rubble. He reminds us that restoration is holy work. And he calls us to be more than spectators, to be part of rebuilding what matters.
So I’m inviting you to come. To see. To listen. And perhaps, to be changed in the process.
