Despite the trashiness of most films, we had a few good onesthis summer. Here are three:

Stardust: Maybe it's the result of having raised four girls, but I'm a lush for a good romance (if it feels now formulaic).

One genre of movie that is hard to get right is the romantic fairy tale.

Ever After and Princess Bride are examples. If you liked these movies, Stardust will transport you to another time and place.
I took the family, and they all loved it.

Note: you may have to work thru some of the black magic bits.

Ratatouille was another home run from Pixar.

Those guys don't know how to make a bad movie.

You'd think that a rat cooking food would be a nonstarter, but in the hands of director Brad Bird, it somehow works. If you enjoy cooking, you'll particularly enjoy the movie.

The Bourne Ultimatum is the third and most satisfying of the trilogy about a CIA hitman who loses his memory.

If you like pounding action like The Fugitive, then you'll like the way this film barely stops for a breath as Jason Bourne races to stay alive at the same time he's racing to discover his identity.

I really struggle with the non-edifying content in R movies these days - these three movies show that sex, profanity and extreme violence
aren't necessary to turn out a quality flik.
