"...a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.  Men will stagger from sea to sea searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it."  Amos 8:11-12

I go through dry seasons, times when I feel disconnected from God.  Seasons of famine when either I've stopped listening or he's stopped talking.

If what Jesus said is true that "man doesn't live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God," then our spirits need regular communication with God or they'll begin to atrophy.

Have you gone through a famine of the soul lately?  It's hard to bear. Your soul was made for divine connection. We need a regular two-way flow of feedback.

That's why we need others who are connected to God.  When I'm going through a personal famine of the soul, you may have some spiritual bread for me. My connection may be weak, but you may pick up what God is wanting to say more clearly.

Hebrews 10:24-25 says that we need to get together regularly to encourage one another and to stir each other up to love and good works. We had a time like that in our living room yesterday. The presence of the Lord brought tears to my eyes and reminded me how much we need encouragement and we need stirring up.

Since the time of Amos, seasons of famines come and go, but the smart man knows where to go to find the word of the Lord. Sometimes it comes to us through a brother or sister who cares enough to listen to what God may want to tell us when we're feeling spiritually deaf.
